logo cecriResearches of the Center for the study of crises and international conflicts – CECRI – are integrated to the Institute of Political Science Louvain-Europe (ISPOLE) of the Catholic University of Louvain. They deal with geopolitics, foreign policy and the study of the different means of ending or preventing international conflicts.

A first pool of research focuses on the analysis of factors that trigger conflicts and their management instruments – sanctions and economic incentives as means of foreign policy ; crises and humanitarian interventions ; role of memory in the reconciliation process for example – combined to the empirical study of international issues and specific peace processes.

A second pool of researchers study Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA) and the hierarchy of power in the international system, both theoretically and empirically. Through geopolitical and geoeconomic lenses, they analyze intertstate relations and the link between domestic and foreign policy.

The Baillet Latour University Chairs EU-China/Russia were created in the years 2000 in the Catholic University of Louvain with the cooperation of the Baillet Latour Fund. They aim at stimulating the research field of relations between the European Union, Russia and China. The FBL University Chairs are a center for research and education that aims at enhancing the expertise of external action of the EU, promoting knowledge of China and Russia as international actors and expand research on the major powers, particularly the BRICS.

Operating in the Faculty of economic, social, political and communication (ESPO) and the Institute of Political Science Louvain-Europe (ISPOLE), the Chairs regularly collaborate with their counterparts at the KULeuven. Gradually, and thanks to an enlargment of research fields, the FBL Chairs are merging with the CECRI-geopolitics & Foreign Policy research program.
